WEEKLY NEWS 4: Teens to Avoid 'First Paycheck Blues'

Teens across the country will soon be spared from the "first paycheck blues." On Sept. 8, more than 300 payroll experts from the American Payroll Association (APA) will head into high schools across the country to teach teenagers all about their paycheck, and brace them for their first payroll tax deduction. This special day, the first "Money Matters" National Education Day, will teach fiscal responsibility by helping teenagers understand their paycheck and the tax withholding system.

"It can be shocking when you see your net pay for the first time," said Dan Maddux, executive director of the APA. "Many people ask 'Who is this FICA guy, and why does he get to keep so much of my money?' The better kids understand their paycheck and the tax withholding system, the better they will handle their own finances. It's all about fiscal responsibility."

"Money Matters" has received considerable support from the federal government, including the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Social Security Administration and members of Congress. Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Tenn.) will teach the class in the Nashville area, and Treasury's Assistant Deputy Secretary Dan Ianicola will partner with payroll experts to teach payroll to teens in the Washington, D.C., area.

"Money Matters" National Education Day is a coordinated volunteer effort by members of the American Payroll Association. The APA teamed with curriculum experts at the National Council on Economic Education to create a special lesson distributed to all "Money Matters" volunteers. This lesson teaches students the elements of a paycheck, the amount of taxes they can expect to have withheld and how those taxes are calculated, in less than an hour.

"Money Matters" National Education Day is being held in conjunction with the 10th Anniversary of National Payroll Week, Sept. 4-8 http://www.nationalpayrollweek.com. During National Payroll Week, the payroll industry comes together to teach employees how to unleash the power of their paycheck and maximize their take-home pay.
