WEEKLY NEWS 2: New Giant Panda

Last Thursday a baby giant panda was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Giant pandas do not often have cubs and even fewer cubs are born in the United States. According to the Associated Press, the Atlanta zoo has waited seven years for this new arrival.

Lun Lun, the cub’s mother, was born in China where panda means “great bear cat.” Giant pandas living in the wild can only be found in China’s bamboo forests because pandas eat bamboo 12 hours a day. Bamboo has relatively little nutrition, so pandas have to eat a great deal. Lun Lun won’t eat 12 hours a day while she is taking care of her new cub.

The new cub does not look like a panda. Its eyes are closed, and it is pink because it has no hair. The zoo will not know if the cub is a boy or girl for several weeks. For now, it will rest in Lun Lun’s paw while the zoo also carefully attends to it. The zoo hopes to display the new cub to the public in December.
