WEEKLY NEWS 3: Restaurant Changes Menu for Former President
The owner of the Arkansas barbeque restaurant that has long been a favorite of former President Bill Clinton said he is planning to alter the menu to better serve the former president.
The news came shortly after Clinton underwent a heart bypass operation which saved his life.
"McClard’s Barbeque" owner Scott McClard said he is breaking a 76-year tradition. The new menu will include items such as sliced pork or beef, beans and cole slaw. All of these dishes will be prepared without any added sugar or bread.
The restaurant in Clinton’s hometown of Hot Springs gained national attention for its catered meals on the President's plane, Air Force One. The meals featured items such as chopped beef, 15 pounds of pork ribs and two gallons each of beans and cole slaw.
However, Clinton’s quadruple bypass surgery has now been linked with his less-than-healthy eating habits. Now, McClard said he wants to be a part of Clinton’s new healthy lifestyle.
"I don't want to be known as the place that stuck him in the hospital," McClard said. "I'm trying to slough it all off on the Big Macs and french fries."
McClard said that he has faxed a copy of his revised menu to a Hot Springs cardiologist for approval.
"We had to make an amendment to the menu, so we have to put it through the Senate and the House first, but (Clinton) has veto power," he joked. "He's the only reservation we've taken in 76 years, and he's the only one we'd change our menu for." (contributing: newsday.com)
