WEEKLY NEWS 4: Animal Teams Provides Hurricane Relief
The HSUS has sent Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) members to Florida to assist with animal issues resulting from Hurricane Frances. The state of Florida has designated The HSUS as the official agency to handle the needs of companion animals. The HSUS is assessing the needs of shelters and animals throughout the region.
“As we have said before, animal issues are people issues,” said Laura Bevan, director of the Southeast Regional Office of The HSUS and incident commander for HSUS response activities. “Our goal is to find out what the animals need and provide help wherever we can.”
Last week The HSUS issued its first ever alert of its entire national network of Disaster Animal Response Teams, which is made up of experienced and highly trained experts who are authorized to travel in restricted areas to rescue pets. The HSUS is working with the state of Florida to establish a central facility for serving all animal needs as a result of Hurricane Frances, and any upcoming storms.
Just a few weeks ago, The HSUS served the needs of people and their animals in areas affected by Hurricane Charley by setting up two temporary facilities that were a staging area for lost animals, and also provided emergency veterinary services, feed and supplies. HSUS responders also assisted with animal rescues in the field.
