MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT 1: 75-year-old Sailor Man

A cartoon character, known for his bulging forearms and a hunger for spinach, recently turned 75 years old.

Popeye the Sailor Man is the honest and hot-tempered character who is celebrating his 75th birthday. The bulky sailor has appeared in over 500 animated cartoons for both movies and television since his debut in 1929. The birthday celebration took place in the hometown of Popeye’s creator, Elzie Segar.

Fans from around the country gathered from Friday through Sunday in the Mississippi river town to commemorate the punching powerhouse. One previous Popeye celebration drew a crowd of 30,000 people who participated in festivities to honor the lovable, spinach-eating cartoon. The number of people in attendance has recently declined, but most Americans will never forget Popeye and his famous proverbs, “I yam what I yam!” and “I've had all I can stand, I can't stands no more!”
