SPORTS ZONE 1: Russian and Swiss Win the U.S. Tennis Open
Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia and Roger Federer of Switzerland won the individual tennis titles at the U.S. Open in New York last weekend.
Kuznetsova beat fellow Russian Elena Dementieva in the first all Russian final of the tournament, which celebrated its 122nd anniversary this year. The 19-year-old won the match 6-3, 7-5, surprising everyone at the event. She continued the Russian women success streak: Anastasia Myskina won the French Open in June and Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon held at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in July. She said to reporters, "I was so nervous in the morning, when I went to practice I was a bit stiff. But, you know, it's weird, sometimes you are afraid of this feeling but something inside of me was telling me I would be fine."
Federer overpowered his competitor Lleyton Hewitt of Australia 6-0, 7-6, 6-0. It was his third Grand Slam Tournament win this season. The Grand Slam tournaments are the most important tennis competitions in terms of winning points in the rankings and prize money. At only 23 years old, Federer is ranked number one and plays without a coach! “Under the conditions--against Hewitt and in my first U.S. Open final--I couldn't ask for more,'' Federer said to reporters. “I got the start I wanted, that I dreamed of, really.” Federer ends the season with a record of 64 wins and only 6 losses.
