WEEKLY NEWS 3: All-Star Survivor Helps Kids
Being on a deserted island--twice--has taught Rupert Boneham a lot about life. It's also renewed his commitment to help guide youth and families in need towards independence.
That’s why on September 16th he launched his own nonprofit organization called Rupert’s Kids. After winning America’s favorite All-Star Survivor, Rupert vowed to continue working with youth in Indianapolis who need empowerment to help them realize their value to society before surviving in the real world.
“For many years I’ve worked with troubled kids in Indianapolis,” said Rupert. “The kids that no one could get through to, or that people didn’t see the worth in helping. But I’ve always believed that everyone has skills and strengths and that life is good as long as you are true to yourself and give back to your community.”
Being true to his own philosophy, Rupert did just that. Unlike any program working with kids in the city, Rupert’s nonprofit aims to teach youth responsibility and job skills by working on dilapidated homes throughout the city. The organization will then sell the homes to families who may not have had an opportunity to own a home, particularly Indianapolis’ homeless population.
Today’s launch took place at Rupert’s former residence, which is also the launching pad for the first home Rupert’s Kids will renovate.
As part of the launch, former Survivor: Pearl Islands cast member Christa Hastie and her company created the Rupert’s Kids’ Web site. Dedicated to the youth it serves, www.rupertskids.org is the hub for the Kid’s Club, a free, membership only fan club. In addition to the club, the site includes upcoming events and a donation center to accept funds that will help purchase supplies for the organization.
“I had a great time creating the Rupert's Kids Web site because it allowed me to take my personal relationship and knowledge of Rupert's character and personality and transform it into an amazing site,” said Hastie. “Colorful, life and community are all words that describe Rupert, the Rupert's Kids mission, and now the Web site. I'm also excited that this is the first site that I've developed using vHost technology. It adds a personal touch, too, which is just what Rupert wanted.”
