SPORTS ZONE 1: NCAA Raise Their Standards
The NCAA is stepping up their eligibility standard. For those of you who do not know, the NCAA is the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Athletes intending to play college sports for an NCAA Division ranked school must adhere to the academic eligibilities that are set for incoming athletes.
Previously, the requirement was 13 core classes throughout high school. These classes include English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language and Philosophy. Recently, the NCAA raised the requirement to 14 core classes for classes entering college in 2005, 2006, and 2007—which will be this year’s high school grades.
However, the class entering college in 2008 the new standard for these students planning to play Division I or Division II sports in college now need to complete 16 core classes. Four of these must be in English, and three need to be in mathematics.
Another academic accomplishment for the NCAA is the graduation rate of the athletes from their colleges or universities. NCAA rates are above almost all other collegiate associations for all Division I sports. Their target graduation rate is 80 percent and they are pushing closer moving to 77 percent.
