WEEKLY NEWS 3: American Art Exhibit

In celebration of its 200th birthday, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts is offering an exhibit of American painters. It will open October 1, 2005, and be available to the public until January 8, 2006. Two artists included in the exhibit are Winslow Homer and Andy Warhol. Homer is famous for his American landscapes and his paintings of the sea. Warhol was commonly known for his multi-image silk-screen paintings of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe.

The exhibit, titled “In Private Hands,” features a total of 100 paintings from American artists. Other painters included are American greats such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock and William Merritt Chase. There were approximately 54 art collectors who donated the pieces for the exhibit. Artist Andrew Wyeth was one, as were philanthropists Eugene Thaw and Dennis Alter.

The Pennsylvania Academy, founded in 1805 and located in Philadelphia, is America’s first art school and its largest art museum. Over the years, it schooled many artists such as Mary Cassatt and Thomas Eakins.
