AROUND THE WORLD 1: Journalists and Somalia

Journalists work to report the news and to let people know what is happening. But in Mogadishu, the capitol of Somalia, journalists have decided to stop working. They have declared a strike, which means that they are not working because they are protesting.

The journalists are upset because the government is trying to pass new laws that will restrict what the journalists can say. The laws would prohibit anything against Islam, the political system, or the security of the country.

Somalia is a country in eastern Africa. It has been torn apart by fighting since 1991 when Mohammed Siad Barre was overthrown. A new government was put in place two years ago, but many people do not respect it.

There are seven radio stations, two television stations, and more than 20 newspapers in the capital city of Mogadishu. When the strike started on Wednesday, only one radio station continued to report the news.
