On October 8, 1871, the Great Fire of Chicago began at nine o'clock in the evening. A cow belonging to one of Chicago's residents, Mrs. O'Leary, kicked over a lantern. Within hours the fire had raged through the city and jumped the Chicago River. The fire burned from Sunday evening to Tuesday morning. It damaged four square miles and killed 250 people.
On October 10, 1845, the United States Naval Academy opened in Annapolis, Maryland. The Naval Academy is a four year school that some members of the navy attend after finishing high school. They receive a college degree and train aboard ships each summer.
On October 12, 1964, the Soviet Union launched the first spacecraft to carry more than one person. It was also the first time the astronauts did not wear spacesuits. The mission lasted 2 days and the spacecraft orbited the Earth.
