WEEKLY NEWS 2: Halloween Safety
On Thursday, October 3, 2002, Dunkin’ Donuts teamed up with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and announced a new national program. The program is called "Mind Your Munchkins Halloween Safety Program" and is designed to help parents and kids have a safer Halloween.
The CPSC was created under the Consumer Product Safety Act and started operating in 1973. It is a federal agency that helps reduce the risk of injury that comes from using different products. They set standards for things like clothes and toys to help keep them safe. Dunkin’ Donuts is the largest coffee and donut chain in the world. Together these two groups hope to reduce injuries during the Halloween season.
Many different things are planned to help make this program a success. Across the nation, police officers will be leading safety seminars at elementary schools, community centers and Dunkin’ Donut shops. The program will also hand out a free brochure that includes Halloween safety tips (and sometimes a coupon for free donuts). These brochures will be available to anyone inside Dunkin’ Donut stores.
So what are some of the safety tips? The program encourages parents to go with young kids when they trick-or-treat Halloween night. It also suggests that costumes should be made from CPSC approved material, which means it will be resistant to fire. Costume safety tips, such as using light colors and choosing makeup instead of masks, are also listed in the free brochure.
