AROUND THE WORLD 2: Germans Set Yodeling Record

Nine-hundred thirty-seven people recently gathered in the southern German town of Meckenbeuren to do something loud and strange. For a full minute the entire group yodeled together, holding a single melody. Yodeling is a traditional European folk form of singing. It sounds very different than modern singing because the songs are mostly melodies without words.

Most of the yodelers who set the record were Germans who had been studying for the event for several months. Several Swiss yodelers also helped to set the record. The group faced the Swiss mountain range, but they didn't get an echo. The concert was held on a Saturday afternoon.

The new record will be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. Earlier this year 807 people yodeled in Dublin, Ireland, but the German yodelers beat that record. That's a lot of singing!
