AROUND THE WORLD 1: Guatemalan Village Destroyed

According to reports from Reuters, many are feared dead in last week's mudslide in the village of Punabaj, Guatemala. Heavy rains have caused destruction in Central America and parts of southern Mexico, leading to tragedies like this mudslide. Reports indicate the mud may be forty-feet thick in some places.

The rescue effort began last Friday with villagers laboring beside rescue workers in the effort to find victims. Both villagers and rescue workers used spades to dig through the thick mud. The heavy rains resulted in an avalanche of mud, trees and rocks.

Manuel Gonzalez, teacher, told Reuters the mudslide engulfed and destroyed his school. "I have only tears left. There are no words for this," he said.

Recent reports indicate that 282 people have been confirmed dead in Central America and Southern Mexico as a result of floods and mudslides--events triggered by the rains of Hurricane Stan.
