On October 13, 1845, citizens of the independent republic of Texas approved a proposed constitution, that when accepted by the Congress, made Texas the 28th American state. Texas was under the control of Mexico until 1836, when it declared its independence. It took nine years for Texas to be allowed to become a part of the United States.







On October 14, 1968, the first live telecast from space was broadcast. Astronauts Walter Marty Schirra, Donn Fulton Eisele, and Ronnie Cunningham gave a tour of the inside of the Apollo 7 spacecraft and showed views through the windows.









On October 16, 1793, Marie-Antoinette was beheaded. Marie-Antoinette was the daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Francis I of Austria. In 1770, she married King Louis XVI of France. At that time, France was suffering economically. People had no money. Marie-Antoinette is well-known for coldly saying "Let them eat cake" when she heard news that the French peasants had no bread to eat. Both she and the king attempted to escape the country. They were captured, condemned for treason and put to death.
