SPORTS ZONE 1: Paterno Leads Penn State To Top 10
Currently, the Penn State Nittany Lions are ranked as the #8 football team. This comes after they beat the Ohio State Buckeyes 17-10 this weekend in a close and exciting game. The Buckeyes had been ranked 6th and the Lions were underdogs, being ranked 16th in the nation at the time.
This marks Penn State’s first appearance in the top ten in years, and also serves as a return to prominence for their coach, Joe Paterno, who has the second most wins of any coach in the history of college football.
Paterno, known as Joe Pa by the Penn State fans, has been coaching the team since 1966. While he has previously won championships and had undefeated seasons with the team, over the last few years some fans have doubted his coaching ability. At age 78, many thought he was too old to coach. But now, after the Ohio State victory, Penn State football is a national power once again. Penn State hasn’t beaten a high ranking team since their 1999 season, when they beat Arizona, the #4 ranked team.
In the win over Ohio State, Penn State was lead by strong performances from its quarterback, Michael Robinson, and defensive star, Paul Posluszny. Posluszny had a great game with 14 tackles, including key defensive stops. While Robinson didn’t have very many yards, he played well and ran for one touchdown.
While the Lions may be riding high after their win and new top ten ranking, they still have a tough schedule coming up over the next few weeks.
Regardless of what happens the rest of the season, Penn State is on the nation’s football radar once again. Joe Paterno has proven that at age 78, he still has what it takes to be a successful college coach.
