AROUND THE WORLD 4: Young Artist Draws for Charity

Wong Ting Feng, a 2-year-old Singaporean boy, sold his drawings outside a mini-mart where his mother works during the week of October 18th. Ting Feng decided to sell his art after reading about the Zhang family in the Chinese language paper Shin Min Daily News. The family is struggling after having quadruplets, three of which suffer from cerebral palsy.

This isn't the first time Ting Feng has sold his art. He previously sold his drawings in an effort to help his mother. His little business attracted enough attention that he was featured in Singapore’s The New Paper. When Ting Feng decided to sell his drawings to help the Zhangs, he taped up the article about the family and the article about himself so that his customers could see that they were contributing to a good cause.

At first, Ting Feng sold his drawings for 50 cents a piece. His mother, Xu Ai Feng, told him that this price was too low because he’d have to sell two drawings to make only one dollar. When his customers found out that Ting Feng would be giving all of the proceeds to the Zhang family, most gave more than 50 cents and many donated money without taking a picture. Ting Feng’s mother even reported that a woman suffering from kidney failure and brain cancer traveled to purchase one of the drawings.

At the end of the week, Ting Feng had sold 35 drawings and raised $191 for the Zhang family. Ting Feng planned to work through the weekend and then give all of this collection to the Zhangs on Sunday.
