SPORTS ZONE 1: Curse Reversed!
On Wednesday night, the Boston Red Sox won its first Major League Baseball World Series in 86 years. Since 1918, Boston played in seven World Series Championships, but lost every single one of them. In the 1946, 1967, 1975 and 1986 Series’, the Red Sox lost to their opponents in Game Seven. Baseball fans like to think Boston has suffered under a curse ever since they traded Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. In the years since, the Yankees have gone on to win a record 26 Championships, and the Red Sox have won none.
That was until October 27th, 2004! The Red Sox swept the St. Louis Cardinals, winning four straight games. Boston became only the fourth team in history to win four straight games without ever trailing in the World Series.
In Game Four, Red Sox player Johnny Damon hit a homerun in the first inning of the game. During Boston’s third time at bat, David Ortiz, Jason Varitek, and Bill Mueller stood on base. Trot Nixon stepped into the batter’s box and hit a hard line drive toward right field. Ortiz and Varitek scored, pulling the score 3-0, Boston’s lead. And that’s all it took to win.
Fans poured into Boston’s streets after their team won the game. The Boston Globe Newspaper printed a special ‘Victory Edition’ at 2AM. "It doesn't get better than this," said one Boston fan. "And to be alive during this is one of the greatest things to happen to us, because you never know when it's going to happen again." Boston fans hope it will happen again, but before another 86 years have passed.
