WEEKLY NEWS 1: Celebrate National Sandwich Day!
On Friday, November 1, 2002, Potbelly will serve up their annual “Belly Buster” contest in honor of National Sandwich Day. This holiday is celebrated on November 3rd to mark the anniversary of John Montague, Fourth Earl of Sandwich. Popular stories say that Montague was in the middle of a card game when he wanted a meal. Since he wanted to continue playing cards, he asked for a slice of meat between two slices of bread. Thus, the sandwich was created in 1762 in an effort to make a quick, easy to eat meal.
Potbelly Sandwich Works will be holding a contest in both Chicago and Washington D.C. This will be the third annual contest for the stores in Chicago. Fifteen contestants will be chosen at random from each of the Chicagoland potbelly locations. The contestants will be competing for a prize of $1,000.
The contest in D.C. will be the first one ever held in that city. Eight competitors will be entered into the contest, and the winner will also receive $1,000.
So what do the contestants have to do? They have to eat as many turkey sandwiches as possible within five minutes. The winner is the person who eats the most.
All of the Potbelly restaurants will celebrate National Sandwich Day by ringing a bell every half hour. Whenever the bell is rung, the customer standing at the register will receive a Potbelly tee-shirt and a free meal!
