V-8 engines are a relatively common, powerful motor that is found in many large sports utility vehicles and pick-up trucks. A French engine designer named Leon Marie-Joseph Clement Levavasseur (can you imagine having a name that long?!) patented the first V-8 engine in France on December 2, 1902.

Nuclear power plants provide the world with energy. The world's first nuclear reactor was built at the University of Chicago in the early 1940's. On December 2, 1942, the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction was achieved. This reaction occurred when natural uranium metal rods were placed between alternate blocks of graphite.

Rosa Parks was a key catalyst for the African-American civil rights movement. Before her time, people on buses were segregated, or separated by color. If the bus was full, the black people were expected to stand, while the white people were allowed to sit down. On December 1, 1955, on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man. The actions of Parks, along with other civil rights leaders, helped lead to the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Although not everyone gets along perfectly today, we have come a long way with the help of special people like Rosa Parks.
