WEEKLY NEWS 1: The USO's Hope and Freedom Tour 2006
Sergeant Major of the Army Kenneth Preston, members of the Army band "Pershing's Own" and a group of celebrities will soon embark on a USO tour to the Persian Gulf region. During the tour, celebrities will perform, visit with troops and sign autographs at a number of locations in the region.
SMA Preston serves as the Army Chief of Staff's personal advisor on all enlisted-related matters, particularly in areas affecting soldier training and quality of life. Last year, Preston and a group of celebrities traveled to Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan to visit service members during the holidays.
Tour participants include:
-- Comedian and best-selling author Al Franken, host of "The Al Franken Show" on Air America Radio;
-- Leeann Tweeden, co-host of "Best Damn Sports Show Period" on the Fox Sports Network;
-- Country recording artist Darryl Worley;
-- Hip Hop group The Washington Projects;
-- Country recording artist and former Army Ranger Keni Thomas;
-- Country recording artist Mark Wills; and
-- Members of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.
This tour continues the USO tradition of bringing entertainment to troops serving far from home, especially during the holidays. A number of celebrities and bands have made trips for the USO so far this year, including Chuck Norris, Gary Sinise, Bill Engvall, Craig Ferguson, Drowning Pool and Shinedown.
