AROUND THE WORLD 1: Health Scare For 'Iron Lady'
Lady Margaret Thatcher, who was Prime Minister of Britain from 1979 to 1990, was admitted to a London hospital after she complained of feeling faint. Lady Thatcher was the first and only woman to run a major Western democratic country for a period of 11 years (3 terms), a record unmatched in the twentieth century. She was given the name the “Iron Lady” by the media in Russia because of her fierce opposition to communism.
The stay at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in west London came after Lady Thatcher complained of feeling faint while at the hair salon. She was admitted and treated in the coronary ward of the hospital but was released after tests gave her a clean bill of health.
Lady Thatcher recently celebrated her eightieth birthday at a London hotel. However, reports indicate that she appeared frail on that occasion. Her health has suffered a decline in recent years following a number of minor strokes. Her son and daughter, Mark and Carol, are currently both overseas, but are said to be returning to the UK in the next few days.
