WEEKLY NEWS 2: Keep The Flu From Spreading

On Wednesday, December 10, 2003, Allina Medical Clinic in Minnesota urged people to take flu precautions. According to recent reports, we’ve entered one of the worst flu seasons in years. And, unfortunately, there is also a shortage of flu vaccines.

The flu is an infection caused by a virus. It affects the upper respiratory tract, which can include the lungs and throat. The flu is contagious and is spread from person to person. Many times the virus is spread through droplets of moisture released into the air. These moisture droplets get in the air when infected people sneeze or cough.

The physicians at the Allina Medical Clinic are urging people to be careful this season. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to lower your chances of catching--or spreading--the flu.

In fact, doctors say the number one way to prevent the spread of the infection is to practice good hand washing habits. Wash your hands often with hot water and soap. Be sure to lather the soap for at least fifteen seconds. Also, try not to touch your face, eyes or mouth with your hands.

Others way to prevent the spread of flu suggested by Allina Medical Clinic include eating healthy foods, getting enough exercise and sleep, and avoiding close contact with people who are sick. You should also avoid sharing personal items like towels, eating utensils, and lip balm.
