WEEKLY NEWS 3: Secrets of the USS Arizona
Sunday marks 62 years since the sinking of the USS Arizona during the
Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Divers from the
National Park Service visited the site this year in hopes of preserving the
ship and uncovering its secrets.
Using devices such as the ROV (remotely operated vehicle), divers and
researchers from the Underwater Resources Center of the National Park
Service in Santa Fe, New Mexico were able to examine different parts of the
wreckage and document conditions of the ship. The ROV is equipped with a
camera and probe designed to take scientific measurements. Researchers hope
the scientific gathered will help to preserve the ship.
Last month, the divers used the ROV to observe still-intact places aboard
the ship, such as a uniform still hanging on a hanger and tile floors that
sailors walked upon. "Each of the things that we see on the wreck reminds us
there were 1,177 individuals that died," said Dave Conlin, National Park
Service underwater archeologist.
