MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT 1: 2005 Music Album Sales

Looking back on music sales in 2005, records show that U.S. album sales were down seven percent. According to the Nielsen SoundScan, album sales from January 2005 to December 25, 2005, were 602.2 million, whereas the sales for that same time period in 2004 were 650.8 million.

Records also showed that music download sales more than doubled over the past year. Downloaded songs from January to December of 2005 were 332.7 million and only 134.2 million in 2004. This was an increase of 148 percent. This decline in physical album sales proves that more people are turning from buying CDs in stores or online to downloading songs off the internet or burning CDs from their friends.

In 2005, the top three best-selling albums, beginning with the best-selling, were 50 Cent’s “The Massacre,” Mariah Carey’s “The Emancipation of Mimi,” and first season American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway.”
