WEEKLY NEWS 2: Soldier's Angels Project
Project Valour-IT (Voice Activated Laptops for our Injured Troops) was originally the vision of Captain Charles Zeigerfuss. In June 2005, Zeigerfuss served as a commander in Iraq and was wounded. An avid blogger who chronicled his personal experiences and stories, his hand injuries interrupted his ability to use a keyboard for writing purposes. Consequently, one his enthusiastic readers generously donated "Dragon Naturally Speaking" voice activated software so Zeigerfuss could continue blogging.
Inspired by the generosity, Zeiggerfuss began envisioning a way to share the software with other handicapped soldiers. Through a collaboration with a non-profit agency based in California, Soldier's Angels, the project came to fruition.
Currently, Project Valour-IT provides laptop computers and voice-controlled software to soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines recovering from arm injuries or amputations. Thirty soldiers have been waitlisted to receive laptops. The Wounded Soldiers Program initiated by Soldier's Angels is actively seeking individuals, church groups, or families to participate in the long-term support of wounded soldiers.
In addition, the agency's Adopt a Soldier program offers individuals who register the opportunity to write letters and send monthly care packages.
