WEEKLY NEWS 3: Robber’s Sons Turn Father In

Three Illinois brothers made a disturbing discovery about their father after viewing some photos on a police website. Garret, Clay, and Jared Ginglen, all of Lewistown, Illinois, were shocked to find that their father was caught by a bank surveillance camera in the act of armed robbery. The brothers never had any question about what was the right thing to do. Once they were certain that it was their father on the surveillance tape, they went to police.

William Ginglen, a 64-year-old grandfather, was a well-respected citizen of Lewistown for many years. The former industrial engineer was active in his church and served on the volunteer fire department. According to his sons, however, their father had been having money problems recently. Ginglen reportedly committed the five robberies in various small towns in Illinois during 2003 and 2004.

The three sons--a music teacher, a policeman, and a safety manager--believe that their father raised them to know right from wrong. Clay Ginglen, 36, told the New York Times, “In a way, he’s responsible for his own capture. He actually raised us to do exactly what we did.”

William Ginglen will be sentenced this week for his crimes. A long sentence could amount to life in prison for the 64-year-old.
