This
"Picture of the Week" honors an American national holiday.
Each
year on the third Monday of January federal offices, schools, post offices,
and banks all across America close to celebrate the newest American holiday.
Fifteen
years after Dr. Martin Luther King's death, then-President Ronald Reagan
signed a bill into law making the third Monday in January a national holiday
to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin
Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He
was one of the best-known advocates of non-violent social change strategies.
He brought together ideas from many different cultural traditions. He
is still known today as a symbol of the African-American civil rights
movement.
The
first national celebration of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday
took place January 20, 1986. This year, it will be celebrated on January
17, 2000!
