WINTER WEATHER

Since winter weather is one of our "Weekly News" stories, we thought it fitting to make our "Picture of the Week" pertaining to the winter weather. Our "Picture of the Week" is children enjoying a fun day in the snow!

Snow is very adaptable material. Sometimes it can be very hard, but also it can be a very soft and gentle material. The temperature outside has a direct effect on the various properties of the snow. When the outside temperature is above 0 degrees Celsius, which is 32 degrees Fahrenheit, the snow is very wet and heavy and has an excellent stickiness.

When the temperature outside is below 0 degrees Celsius, the snow is a very light and fine material. All of its moisture has frozen and the snow is actually almost lighter than the air. Snow is also very dry at this temperature and doesn't have any stickiness. Therefore, it is almost impossible to do any constructing like building snow men or snow forts.

Snow that is freshly fallen is a very fine material. However, snow easily turns to hard and thick material when it is dense. Snow can become an excellent building material when it is compressed. Compressed snow can actually be compared to light concrete!

A POPULAR WINTER SPORT:

A snowball fight is a popular winter sport among both kids and adults. A snowball fight does not require any special equipment except at least two people and some snow.

The RULES are pretty simple:

1. Participants are divided up into two or more teams of equal size.

2. Each team builds a good cover (example: a snow fort or castle).

3. Teams make snowballs beforehand and during the fight.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN TO PUT STONES OR OTHER HARD

OBJECTS INTO SNOWBALLS!

4. The main idea is to try to hit enemy teams with snowballs and conquer enemy bases.

5. The winning team is the team who first conquers the enemy base! But the primary purpose is to have fun!
