THE
EMPIRE STATE BUILDING
We
wrote about the Empire State Building in the "Weekly News" section of
Kidsnewsroom.com. Our "Picture of the Week" expands upon this famous building.
The Empire State Building is a genuine part of both New York and United
States history. The official opening of the building was May 1, 1931.
The building has quite a history and some strange things have happened
there. For example, in 1945 at the end of World War II, an Army Air Corps
B-25 double-engine bomber crashed into the 79th floor of the building.
This accident happened due to dense fog and decreased visibility. Damage
to the building was $1 million, but the structural integrity of the building
was not affected.
Many
people may think that the Empire State Building would sway in heavy winds
because it is so tall. The facts are that in 110 miles per hour winds,
the Empire State Building will give 1.48 inches total.
This building has such character; it has even been in many movies. One
of the most famous of them was KING KONG.
The
Empire State Building is a U.S. National Historic Landmark. It stands
more than a quarter of a mile into the air above Manhattan. There are
two observatories on the 86th and 102nd floors. This building is one of
the main tourist attractions in New York City!
