PRESIDENT'S
DAY
President's
Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February. This year the holiday
is honored on February 21, 2000. This week's "Picture of the Week" represents
President's Day.
Abraham Lincoln's birthday is February 12th and George Washington's birthday
is February 22nd. Up until the year 1971, both February 12, and February
22 were observed as federal holidays to honor the birthdays of those two
great presidents.
In 1971, President Richard Nixon decided to proclaim one single federal
holiday as President's Day. This new holiday was to be observed on the
Third Monday of every February to honor all past presidents of the United
States of America.
Here
are some ideas on how to have some President's Day fun:
1. Finish the sentence "If I was president I would…….". This will make
a great keepsake to read in the years to come.
2. With a group of children you can put giant coins on the floor and March
around them to music. When the music stops the children have to pick up
the coin in front of them and try to match it to a friend's coin. This
is a great activity for learning the names of coins as well as the presidents
on them!
3.
Make a Red, White, and Blue salad:
What you need:
1-2 bananas
1-2 cups blueberries
1-2 cups strawberries
Plastic knives and bowls
What you do:
Cut bananas and strawberries. Mix all the fruit together. You can have
children count a certain number of slices and berries to make this an
educational activity. Mix up all the ingredients and enjoy!
