VICE PRESIDENT AL GORE

Vice President Al Gore is chosen as our "Picture of the Week" because he sealed the Democratic Presidential nomination with a sweep on Super Tuesday.

On Tuesday, March 7, 2000, there were a total of 16 primaries/caucuses around the nation to determine who will be chosen as the Democratic Presidential nominee. Gore beat Bill Bradley in all 16 states to eliminate any doubt that he would be the Democratic presidential candidate.

After the results were in on Tuesday, Gore praised Bradley by stating, "Tonight I salute Senator Bill Bradley. I have learned from his passions."

Bradley campaigned hard but even the earliest primaries left him with quite a bit of doubt that he would earn the Democratic presidential nomination. He lost in an early Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary and it was all up hill from there. He also lost in Missouri, the state where he was born, and in New York, where he was a star basketball player.

On Thursday, March 09, 2000, Bradley officially dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed Vice President Al Gore.

This victory will now allow Al Gore to focus his campaign on the November presidential election.

On the Republican side, John McCain did not fare well against George W. Bush. He did win victories in the New England states; however, this was offset by big losses in New York and California. McCain is in a tough position now. Primaries continue in the Rocky Mountains this Friday where Bush is predicted to do well. Then the race heads South, which is considered to be Bush country because he is governor in Texas.

On Thursday, March 09, 2000, John McCain announced that he would be suspending his presidential campaign. At Kidsnewsroom.com press time, McCain had just suspended his campaign and had not officially dropped out of the race entirely. This allows him to keep his options open while any other decisions are being made. Kidsnewsroom.com will continue to follow the presidential election all the way until November. Keep reading!
