WEEKLY NEWS: WHITE HOUSE INTRUDER
The President of the United States lives in The White House in Washington, D.C. For the President's protection, there is a security fence that surrounds the entire White House. Secret Service personnel closely monitor this fence twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. On Tuesday, March 28, 2000, The White House almost had an unwanted visitor.
Jjust prior to the President's scheduled departure, an intruder surprised Secret Service personnel when he jumped the fence and began to make his way to The White House.
Secret Service personnel immediately stopped the intruder, and the President was not harmed. A Secret Service spokesman stated that the intruder was not injured in the process.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was visiting President Clinton at the time of the attempted break-in. The media reported that the visit and the intrusion do not appear to be related.
At this time, the motivation for the jump is not clear.

Oscar night is when the Academy Award winners are named. This annual evening is one of the most prestigious nights in Hollywood. The stars come to this event looking their best!
At the Oscars, The Academy honors the best films of the previous year. Almost all aspects of a film are recognized on Oscar night. Academy Award categories range from best lighting to best costume design to best directing to best actor/actress.
This year, the Oscars were awarded on Sunday, March 26. Billy Crystal was the host of the Academy Awards this year. 2000 marked the seventh time that Crystal hosted the event. Crystal has had an outstanding career in entertainment. Not only is he an actor, but he is also known for his direction behind the scenes. The audience always seems to enjoy his entertainment at the Oscars.
Following are the winners of some popular categories. Best Film of the year and best directing of 1999 went to "American Beauty." The best actor in a leading role went to Kevin Spacey, who starred in "American Beauty." The best actress in a leading role was awarded to Hilary Swank; she starred in the movie "Boys Don't Cry." The Oscars for the supporting roles were awarded as follows. Michael Caine won for best actor in a supporting role and Angelina Jolie for best actress in a supporting role. The best original song was Tarzan and best sound was awarded to "The Matrix."
This year marked the 72nd year that Academy Awards were presented. Film has changed drastically in the past century, and it will be interesting to watch what is on the horizon in the new millenium.
