CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL

Last week's Picture of the Week showed the beautiful cherry blossoms that were presented as a gift to the United States from Japan in 1912.

This week, the annual "Cherry Blossom Festival" takes place on Saturday, April 8. For each state represented, there is a "cherry princess" who will take part in the parade. Marching bands from all over the country begin down Constitution Avenue at Seventh Street at 9:30 a.m.

Once the floats and clowns reach 17th street, about two hours later, the show is over.

On the same day, the Sakura Matsuri Festival takes place. Traditional Japanese arts are celebrated, and live on-stage performances by Japanese groups provide entertainment through the evening.
