CUBA

 

Cuba has been in the news regularly since November 25, 1999 when Elian Gonzalez was found floating off the coast of Miami on an innertube as he tried to escape from Cuba with his mother.

This week, our "Picture of the Week" represents Cuba. The picture is of a beautiful Cuban beach.

Here are also some "Fun Facts" so we can all know more about this country that has been in the news.

*Official Name Republic of Cuba

*Area of Cuba is 44,200 square miles (about the size of Pennsylvania)

*Cuba has a population of about 11 million people

*Havana is the capital of Cuba

*Cuba's climate is tropical (mostly warm weather)

*Cuba is the 15th largest island in the world

*Cuba is filled with fertile land that allows cattle to graze and sugar, coffee and tobacco to be grown

*Christopher Columbus landed in Cuba on October 27, 1492 and stated that Cuba was "the most beautiful land that human eyes had ever seen"

*Communist Government assumed power in Cuba by force January 1, 1959

*Head of State is Fidel Castro - he is similar to what we Americans know as president
