THE STANLEY CUP

Right now the National Hockey League is in the middle of their playoffs. The "Picture of the Week" represents the championship trophy for the NHL. It is a picture of the Stanley Cup, which is awarded to the winning team!

Here are a few facts about the Stanley Cup:

* The Stanley Cup is the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America.

* Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston and son of the Earl of Derby, donated the Stanley Cup. It was donated in 1893.

* Lord Stanley originally bought the Cup for $50.00.

* Montreal won the first Stanley Cup for the 1892-1893 season.
