MEMORIAL DAY

This story submitted by Lauren M., age 9, Manassas, Virginia.

Memorial Day is a day for remembering men and women who served in the armed forces. The armed forces include the army, the navy the air force and the marine corps. Together, these military men and women protect our freedom.

In 1868, the 30th of May was ordered to be set aside as a memorial day for the purpose of honoring those who died in the Civil War. The first observance was held at Arlington National Cemetery. Over time, the day became one of remembrance for all who had given their lives in battle for America. This week's picture of the week shows a memorial flag placed beside a soldier's grave at Arlington National Cemetery.

At Bennett Elementary School in Manassas, Virginia, we follow a special tradition each Memorial Day. On the Friday before the holiday, we honor the armed forces by planting a tree in their remembrance. The whole school goes outside and watches Mr. Spencer, our principal, dig a hole in the ground. Then, he plants a small tree. Each student gets in line and adds a little bit of dirt until the hole is filled. This is our way of taking time to remember how thankful we are for the freedom we have in the United States.
