HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!

Did you guess what this picture is all about? It shows a father enjoying some relaxing time in his favorite chair! While you plan a special day for your father, or another father-like figure in your life, kidsnewsroom.com thought we would fill you in on the history of Father's Day. So go give your dad a big hug, sit down and read on!

Would you believe a regular person like you and me came up with the idea for Father's Day! Someone wanted to create a special day to tell her father just how much she appreciated all he did for her throughout her life. Her name was Sonora Louise Smart Dodd. Her father, William Smart, raised her and her siblings all by himself. So, since her father was born in June, she proposed to have a special day during that month to honor her father. The following year, on June 19, 1910, the first Father's Day was held in Spokane, Washington. However, it was not until 1966 that the 3rd Sunday in June officially became a national holiday. President Lyndon Johnson was the president who signed the presidential proclamation.

Who are the important father figures in your life? Remember, Father's Day is a time to honor all your male role models. So pick up the phone, write a letter or create a special card for those men who are important to you; let them know how much they mean to you!
