TAKING ADVANTAGE OF TECHNOLOGY

One way to understand what the word technology means is to put it like this: technology is all of the things that make ways to help you to accomplish tasks, or do things.

When your parents were in elementary school, if they needed to learn something about history, they would usually go to a library to find the information that they needed. At that time, the research technology was limited to books, micro-fiche, cassettes and video.

Today, new technologies are appearing so quickly that it seems like we can do almost anything! Some of the latest inventions include the "Palm Pilot" -- a mini computer that fits in your pocket, cell phones with built-in e-mail, and pagers with built-in e-mail. All of these technologies have one thing in common; they all provide people with access to the Internet.

If you need to learn something about history today, where can you go? Yes, you can go to the library, but it is often easier to get the information you need from the Internet. As time goes by, more and more people have access to the Internet and access to billions of pages of useful information.

At the end of this month, we will be launching a new section to kidsnewsroom.com called "Kids and Schools On The Web." Kids everywhere will be invited to put up web pages on kidsnewsroom, with web lessons included! There will be a section to teach you how to make a simple web page, and you will be given a directory on our server.

We believe that technology provides students with real benefits. Students can learn more about a wide variety of topics, and they can grow culturally. Kids learn to tell the difference between unreliable and reliable information, since there are so many resources. One of the best things about the Internet is that you can learn by looking and doing.

Kidsnewsroom hopes that everyone will take advantage of the great technologies available to us today. We encourage you to think about how well you will do when the time comes to get a job if you learn to use today's technology. These days, almost every company has a Web site. That means, whatever job you might like to have some day will likely be somehow associated with the Internet.

If you hope to be a veterinarian, then be sure to know how to access medical information on the Web. Do you like video games? Wouldn't it be fun to be a video game programmer? You'll certainly need to be a computer expert for that! Interested in teaching? There will soon be a large demand for Web site design and development teachers. The Internet is something you really need to know!

Be a leader. E-mail us at newsdesk@kidsnewsroom.com, and let us know that you would like to make a web site, and we will show you how. Please invite your parents or teachers to contact us, also.
