NEW CHICAGO TOWER

Petronas Towers -- Currently the World's Tallest Building

The city of Chicago has a plan to build a skyscraper that would be the tallest building in the world! The city's Plan Commission agreed to the idea, which would allow a builder to build a 108-story building.

The building would be a little city in itself filled with stores, offices, and even apartments. There would also be a subway entrance and a parking garage. One would be able to see four different states from the top! The cost of the building would be about $500 million and the project would take four years to finish.

Here is an example of just how tall this building would be. The Statue of Liberty stands 307 feet and the Empire State Building stands 1,250 feet. This new skyscraper would stand 1,550 feet tall. That is five times the height of the Statue of Liberty!

Right now, the world's tallest building is the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This building stands 1,483 feet. The next tallest building is the Sears Tower in Chicago. It stands 1,450 feet.

If everyone involved agrees to let this building be built, construction may begin as early as May of 2000.
