PRESIDENT GETS A RAISE

The next president of the United States may be paid double what President Clinton is being paid.

On Wednesday, September 28, 1999, President Clinton signed papers approving doubling the next president's salary. The new salary for the next president would be $400,000 per year. This would be the first presidential raise since 1969.

The idea also awards members of Congress a 3.4% pay raise which would give most members of Congress a yearly pay of $141,300.

Some Americans are against this pay raise because the average American earns less than this amount. Also, there are many other perks to go along with being president that are not taken out of the salary.

People who are in favor of the pay raise say that the presidential yearly salary should be enough money to attract talented people to hold such a high position in government.

The raise for Congress would begin in January of 2000 but for the presidency the raise would go into effect when the next person takes office.
