Some parts
of Mexico suffered its worst flooding in forty years this past week.
The Mexican government called a state of emergency on Tuesday, October
5, 1999 in four states where bad flooding caused many rivers to overflow.
These floods have caused about 110 deaths and also forced over 100,000
people to leave their homes. Some of the places where people were forced
to leave were Hidalgo and the Tabasco State.
Mexico's
national weather service said that the Gulf Coast City of Tuxpan got
15.7 centimeters (6.3 inches) of rain in 24 hours. State officials warned
that water levels could rise more! People who live in Villahermosa have
been scared because they have heard that crocodiles up to 2.5 meters
(8 feet) long have been swimming in the flooded streets.
The army
has sent troops to help people reach safe housing and some schools have
been closed until further notice.
