CHICAGO CUBS FIRE
MANAGER
Jim Riggleman
had been the Chicago Cubs' baseball manager for the past five seasons.
On October 4, 1999, this five-year job came to an end. He was fired just
one day after a bad season, which landed the Cubs in last place in the
National League Central.
The Chicago
Cubs record this past season was 67 wins and 95 losses. This was the teams'
worst record since 1980 in years where full schedules of baseball were
played.
The Cubs
general manager Ed Lynch gave Mr. Riggleman the bad news. After he was
told, Mr. Riggleman answered questions and accepted responsibility for
this past season, which cost him his job.
The Cubs
also fired four other coaches. These other coaches were pitching coach
Marty DeMerritt, third base coach Tom Gamboa, first base coach Dan Radison,
and bullpen coach Dave Bialas. The Cubs did say, however, that these coaches
might be offered other jobs once a new manager is hired.
The Cubs
said that Riggleman could work with their minor league teams, but at this
time he has made no future job choices. Jim Riggleman was the Cubs' sixth
manager in the 1990's.
