TYPHOON HITS CHINA

A newspaper called China Daily reported that an area in the southeast part of China called Fujian province was hit by a typhoon that caused $240 million in damages and killed 30 people.

The storm happened on Saturday, October 10, 1999 and hit the city of Xiamen. The report said that this was the worst storm to hit Xiamen in 46 years. More than 200 people were hurt and more than 17,000 trees were knocked down along with many buses that were overturned.

A typhoon is what the people in the northwest Pacific call a hurricane. A hurricane is usually about 400 miles across and has heavy rain and winds up to 125 miles per hour.

Water, power, and gas were cut off to many people. Also, about 4,000 people were stranded due to ruined roads or delayed railroad and air traffic
