BASEBALL FUN FACTS

Since baseball playoffs are in the news, here are a few fun facts about baseball.

Up until 1997, baseball teams only played teams in their own league during the regular season. This means that American League teams would play against other American League teams and National League teams would play against other National League teams. In 1997, this tradition ended when interleague play began. Now, teams from the American League can play National League teams during the regular season. The first interleague game took place on June 12, 1997.

Two new major league teams began playing in 1998. These teams are the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum opened on June 12, 1939 in Cooperstown, New York.

WEATHER WORDS

Hurricane: a storm that goes around in circles with wind speeds of 73 miles per hour or more. This type of storm is called a hurricane when it occurs in the Atlantic Ocean, a typhoon when it occurs in the Pacific Ocean, and a cyclone when it occurs in the Indian Ocean.

Wind Speed: In 1805, Sir Francis Beufort, an admiral in the British Navy, came up with a system for describing wind speeds at sea. This scale is called the Beufort Scale and it uses the numbers 0 - 12. The higher the number, the faster the wind speed.

0 Calm (under 1 mph - miles per hour)
1 Light Air (1 - 2 mph)
2 Light Breeze (4 - 7 mph)
3 Gentle Breeze (8 - 12mph)
4 Moderate Breeze (13-18 mph)
5 Fresh Breeze (19-24 mph)
6 Strong Breeze (25-31 mph)
7 Near Gale (32-38 mph)
8 Gale (39 - 46 mph)
9 Strong Gale (47 - 54 mph)
10 Storm (55 - 63 mph)
11 Violent Storm (64 - 72 mph)
12 Hurricane (over 74 mph)

* The U.S. weather service also uses the numbers 13 - 17 for winds of hurricane speed! #
