1. On October 15, 1860, an 11-year old girl named Grace Bedell wrote a letter to Presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln. The letter told him that he should grow a beard. He must have thought this was a great idea!

 

 

2. On October 16, 1984, Dr. Leonard L. Bailey performed the first baboon heart transplant. This is where a healthy baboon heart replaces a sick human heart. The patient was a 15-day-old baby girl known as "Baby Fae". After one month the baby died when her body did not accept the baboon heart.

 

3. The magazine National Geographic first hit the newsstand on October 17, 1888.

 

 

4. The first mail collection and delivery in a car owned by the United States government was made on October 19, 1914 in Washington, D.C.

 

5. On October 19, 1933, the Berlin Organizational Committee introduced basketball to the Olympic Games.
