1. On October
15, 1860, an 11-year old girl named Grace Bedell wrote a letter to Presidential
candidate Abraham Lincoln. The letter told him that he should grow a
beard. He must have thought this was a great idea!

16, 1984, Dr. Leonard L. Bailey performed the first baboon heart transplant.
This is where a healthy baboon heart replaces a sick human heart. The
patient was a 15-day-old baby girl known as "Baby Fae". After one month
the baby died when her body did not accept the baboon heart.

magazine National Geographic first hit the newsstand on October 17,
1888.
