CHARACTER EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Character education is beginning to grow in this country. It is based on the belief that academic development of young children is based on a combination of social, ethical, and emotional development. People who believe in this type of education see schools as a partner with families to help teach children good core values to foster development.

National Schools of Character is a yearly awards program that honors certain schools, grades kindergarten through high school, for outstanding work to promote social, ethical, and academic development. The schools chosen receive the national honor because they create safe and caring places that encourage learning through classes, culture, and activities.

This program is sponsored by the Character Education Partnership, (CEP), which is a national nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C.

The 1999 National Schools of Character include:
St. Leonard Elementary School in St. Leonard, Md.
Atlantis Elementary School in Cocoa, FL.
Marion Intermediate School in Marion, SC.
Traut Core Knowledge School in Ft. Collins, CO.
Hilltop Elementary School in Lynnwood, WA.
The Talent House Private School in Fairfax, VA.
An Achievable Dream Academy in Newport News, VA.
Kennedy Middle School in Eugene, OR.
The Montrose School in Natick, MA.
Youth Opportunities Unlimited in San Diego, CA.
Wake County Public Schools in Raleigh, NC.

The eleven winners will be honored by CEP on October 22-24, 1999 at the CEP national meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina.
