RUMBLING IN ECUADOR

Tungurahua means "Throat of Fire" in the Quechua Indian language. Tungurahua is the name of a volcano in Ecuador that has been rumbling and raining ash recently. Many people that live near this volcano fear a full-blown volcanic eruption is in the near future.

Banos, Ecuador is a popular place for tourists to go when visiting Ecuador because of its hot springs and beautiful waterfalls. Banos is located about 100 miles south of Ecuador's capital, Quito. About 20,000 people who live in Banos left their homes this past Sunday just in case this volcano decided to erupt.

Tungurahua started to "rumble" back in September. It has erupted 81 times in the past 3,000 years with the last eruption in 1918. Tungurahua is one of Ecuador's 31 active volcanoes and stands 15,060 feet above sea level.

We will follow the activity of this volcano in the weeks to come.
