CYCLONE HITS INDIA

The eastern Indian state of Orissa got hit with a cyclone on Monday October 18, 1999 causing widespread damage and injury.

The cyclone had 120 mph winds! These winds tore trees down and knocked houses to the ground!

Emergency workers looked for people who were trapped beneath fallen trees and crushed houses. This cyclone even ruined the coastal cyclone warning system in one town. It also knocked out some wireless phone equipment!

The heavy rains caused the Rushikulya and Badanadi Rivers to overflow in many places.

A team of officials has been sent to Orissa to see exactly how much damage has been done and to decide if extra relief help was needed.
