On the
Professional Golfers Association Tour (or PGA Tour), there is a rule
that states golfers must walk when they play golf. Next year we all
may see a golfer who is an exception to that rule on the PGA Tour.
Casey Martin
is a disabled golfer who sued the PGA Tour for the right to ride a golf
cart in PGA competition and he won. This week, Martin is playing in
one final tournament that could earn him a spot on the PGA Tour next
season.
Here is
how it works. The Nike Tour is where golfers play to try and earn spots
on the PGA Tour. The top 15 money winners on the Nike Tour earn a spot
on the PGA Tour for the next season. The Nike Tour is coming to an end
this weekend and Casey Martin is 12th on the tour money list. If he
just plays well this weekend, he should make the cut.
Martin
has trouble walking because he suffers from Klippel-Trenauney-Weber
Syndrome. This is a rare circulatory disorder (circulatory meaning how
blood flows throughout your body) in his right leg which makes it hard
for him to walk. This is the reason he wants to ride in a cart.
We will
follow Martin as he tries to overcome the odds and make the PGA Tour.
